$30 per person, per day. (Usually about 3 hours) I have 16 years experience as a spinner and love to share this art.
I have Louet, Ashford, and Lendrum spinning wheel is available for your use, or bring your own. I will supply enough roving to get you started. You may buy more from my Wensleydale, mohair, or blended roving after that. If your desire is to increase beginning skills or learn some techniques for making novelty yarn, I am willing to help with that as well.
Instruction in picking, carding, and fiber blending is also available.
I am willing to work the timing of lessons around sightseeing, if that is part of your goal. We can get together several times in one day or spread a lesson out over a couple of days, depending on how you want to do
Watercolor Felting Lessons
$125 per person, three day class. Learn to make a prefelt and use it as a canvas for needle felted designs. Methods of hard and soft edged images, fiber blending, and making the surface designs adhere to the prefelt backing will be taught. An alternative method of direct wet felting and dry embellishing will be explored.
Because this class is very detailed and I like my students to leave with finished products and enough instruction to be able to duplicate the process at home, three full days of 6 - 8 hours are required.
$25 per person, 2 - 3 hr. lesson in basic knit, purl, yarn over or cable stitches. I have been knitting since I was 8 and would love to help anyone learn to work with this wonderful craft. Beginners might like to make a sampler. I have had many students who just want help with reading a pattern correctly.
There are lots of books for browsing and inspiration and I have both handspun and mill spun Wensleydale available. You may also want to bring an existing project and just knit, lessons or not! The choice is up to you. This is an ideal setting for relaxing and rejuvenating your spirit. There are always some skeins of handspun and Swallow needles made from milk protein for sale at the ranch, as well as knitted and felted items.
Beginning Spindle Spinning
$60 for beautiful hard wood spindle made by Jim, 2 oz. fiber, and lesson, OR $30 for a lesson only if you have your own spindle and wool.
Spinning on a drop spindle is wonderfully portable and, once you learn, it is easy to keep improving with practice. Drop spindles can hold just as much fiber as a normal spinning wheel and the singles you make can be plied. A drop spindle is really every bit as useful as a spinning wheel but takes much less room and is much less expensive. A good way to introduce yourself to the world of spinning and see if it is really for you!
Carding and Creating Wrapped Novelty yarns
$30 for 3 hour lesson if you bring your own materials, $50 if you want materials included. Using a variety of wool, mohair, angelina, and other fibers, learn to first blend fibers with blending board, hand, or drum carder, and then wrap the blended fibers around a prespun core on a spinning wheel. Yarns created can be used as trim in as many ways as a person can think of! This class is for those who already know how to do basic wheel spinning.
$25 for half day class per child. This includes use of tools, wool, etc.
I have taught in a variety of public schools for 35 years and love working with children. I have done children's classes at the ranch in dyeing wool with kool aid, carding and felting around rocks to make special pouches, spool knitting, and making felted pictures, making and using knitting needles, and felting beads and bracelets.
Other classes can be created according to need. Call or e-mail for possibilities.
